Managing Immigration Related Issues
Here we provide basic information for Basotho and foreign investors on relevant immigration related issues as follows:
  • Obtaining business visas for visitors to Lesotho
  • Obtaining work permits
  • Obtaining residence permits
  • 6 month border concessions between South Africa and Lesotho

Obtaining business visas for visitors to Lesotho

The following types of visa can be obtained for business visitors:

  • 72 hour visa: If you do not have a valid visa to visit Lesotho (and you are from a country where you cannot automatically get a visa to enter Lesotho) the Lesotho National Development Corporation can arrange for a “72-hour visa
     
  • Single and Multiple Entry Visas

Citizens from certain countries can obtain business visas on arrival, others must apply for visas prior to arrival. For further information please contact your diplomatic missions in-country or LNDC.

Obtaining work permits for visitors to Lesotho

In order to take up employment in Lesotho foreigners are required to be in possession of a valid work permit. In order to obtain a work permit you should:

  • Complete a relevant application form
  • Submit your application to the Commissioner of Labour in the Ministry of Employment & Labour
  • If your Work Permit is approved then you must go in person to the Central Police Station (in Maseru) and be formally issued with a Work Permit (the police take the photograph of the successful applicant)

Obtaining residency permits for visitors to Lesotho

As a foreigner, if you intend to take up primary residence in Lesotho you will need a residence permit. In order to obtain a residency permit you should:

  • Complete a relevant application form
  • Submit an application to the Immigration & Passport Services located in the Ministry of Home Affairs in Maseru

LNDC is able to assist industrialists in this process.

6 Month Border Concessions between South Africa and Lesotho

Business people who regularly travel between Lesotho and South Africa can apply for a 6 month border concession that will enable them to commute between the two countries without having to report to an immigration officer. This concession only applies to the Land Border posts between the countries (i.e. not applicable if an applicant is flying into and from Lesotho). Applicants will have to apply to the Lesotho and the South African authorities separately for this concession

The process for receiving concessions is as follows:

Lesotho
Applicants apply at the offices of the Lesotho’s Immigration & Passport Services which is located Ministry of Home Affairs and Security in Maseru with a copy of their passport (this service is also available at the Maputsoe/Ficksburg border posts)

South Africa
Applicants can get 6th month concessions at either the immigration offices at Maseru Bridge or the Maputsoe / Ficksburg border posts. Generally applications are not processed after 11h00; no concessions are issued on Saturdays or Sundays. It is important to note that South African citizens get preferential treatment
